Veterans Day

I had the privilege of growing up in close proximity to many service members, military families, and veterans. It was commonplace to have friends in my classes who moved schools every few years for new assignments. I come from a family with strong connections to multiple branches of the military and have a deep gratitude for the daily sacrifices made by so many families. I’ve had the opportunity to teach students that remind me of my former classmates. I’ve also had the honor of teaching and coaching students who have chosen one of the branches of the military following their graduations. I feel a deep admiration for these young people and their career path.
One of my all time favorite stories to share in my classroom, highlights Michael Trotter of The War & Treaty. Michael's story of playing Saddam Hussein’s piano and singing in his house in Iraq, led him to be recognized by his peers for his outstanding voice. The discovery of Michael's musical ability, led him to the heavy responsibility of memorializing his fellow soldiers by singing at their funerals. This story continues to give me the chills every time I hear it.
There is a rich tradition of music throughout the armed forces. Each branch of the military has a variety of exceptional musical groups from choirs, to wind bands, to jazz, pop, salsa, and rock bands. Some individuals are recognized for their performance abilities as solo performers throughout their service. Many popular musicians have also served in the military. The perspective of musicians who serve, and those influenced by those who serve, can be seen throughout a century of American music.
This Veteran's Day, thank a veteran and highlight some of their music in your classrooms. If you are looking for a few examples to highlight, you can reference this partial list. Jimi Hendrix, Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock will blow the socks right off your students.
